Published to accompany a major exhibition at The Queen's Galleries in London and Edinburgh, this book provides new insights into George IV as a collector. Although George led a life bounded by convention, he was a genuine connoisseur who was able to form an unrivalled collection of paintings, porcelain and furniture. These he presented and displayed in a series of architecturally adventurous spaces. His acquisitions continue to form the backdrop to royal ceremony, a legacy that is one of the principal pillars of today's magnificent Royal Collection.

Rebel, Jester, Mystic, Poet

  • Categories: ART

Rebel, Jester, Mystic, Poet tells the story of the evolution of Iranian contemporary art by examining the work of 30 artists. This is art where the ills of internal politics remain astutely masked below a layer of ornamentation, poetry, or humor. What unites the disparate works into a coherent theme is the artists' coping mechanisms, which consist of subversive critique, quiet rebellion, humor, mysticism, and poetry--hence the publications title. The subtitle Contemporary Persians is also a reference to a strategy of survival, this one used by Iranians in the United States during the early 2000s; at a time when 'Iranians' were identified with hostage takers and terrorists, they adopted the identity 'Persians', which remained free of such associations. This title collects the work of a number of artists who are already well-known in the United States, including among others Afruz Amighi, whose work is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Monir Farmanfarmaian, who received a major exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in 2015.

Asia through Art and Anthropology

* AWARDED BEST ANTHOLOGY BY THE ART ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND * How has Asia been imagined, represented and transferred both literally and visually across linguistic, geopolitical and cultural boundaries? This book explores the shifting roles of those who produce, critique and translate creative forms and practices, for which distinctions of geography, ethnicity, tradition and modernity have become fluid. Drawing on accounts of modern and contemporary art, film, literature, fashion and performance, it challenges established assumptions of the cultural products of Asia. Special attention is given to the role of cultural translators or 'long-distance cultural specialists' whose ...

For many in the West, Chinese contemporary art is synonymous with the political realist painters of the 1980s and 90s, who recycled the styles of communist social realism with pop cynicism. This book examines the different modes of production, artist groups, market systems and infrastructure that shape artistic production in China.

Magnificent Entertainments

Drawing on primary sources such as commemorative prints, newspaper accounts, and diary entries, this book investigates just how essential these fanciful designs were in creating events with lasting impact and popular appeal. The author also delves into the various materials used for construction and embellishment: applications of sugar, sand, marble dust, or chalk lent lustre and colour to surfaces, while stand-alone firework temples and temporary reception rooms were often crafted of little more than wood, canvas, paint, and paste.
